Flu                                                                                                                    The flu virus can put a healthy person in bed for a week. Being fit and healthy helps your immune system but will not fully protect you from the flu. Even if you had a flu vaccine or virus last year, chances are you're not immune to this year's most common virus because it's different - they keep changing.  The vaccines are made each year based on the most common types of flu circulating.

Get a flu vaccination as early in the season as possible because it can take up to two weeks after the vaccination for you body to build up antibodies.

Studies show you can't get sick from a flu vaccine. The vaccine contains fragments of disrupted (inactivated) virus to stimulate the immune system to make antibodies that will protect you.

Some people think they've become sick from the flu vaccine but many other viruses are also present throughout the year, so coincidentally catching a different respiratory infection or other 'flu-like' virus may be being blamed on the flu vaccination.

The flu vaccine is not useless even if it does not correspond exactly to the flu strain that appears each year. Effectiveness is reduced only by the degree of difference between the virus and vaccine strains, but its efficacy is not completely lost.

Research shows that if you do contract a version of the flu virus after a current seasonal flu vaccination your symptoms are more likely to be reduced than if you had not received a vaccination at all. The flu vaccine is generally well tolerated. Some side effects have been reported and usually disappear within one to two days without treatment.
